{"id":233,"date":"2003-10-27T18:03:09","date_gmt":"2003-10-27T22:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tradermike.net\/movethecrowd\/2003\/10\/rules_of_acquisition\/"},"modified":"2003-10-27T18:03:09","modified_gmt":"2003-10-27T22:03:09","slug":"rules_of_acquisition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.michaelseneadza.com\/blog\/2003\/10\/27\/rules_of_acquisition\/","title":{"rendered":"Rules of Acquisition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/s-train.kaphmedia.net\/archives\/000189.php\" title=\"Enterprise is very good!\">post about Star Trek: Enterprise over at S-Train Canvass<\/a> reminded me that I&#8217;ve been meaning to do this post of the Ferengi&#8217;s Rules of Acquisition.  Enterprise has gotten better this season but it still can&#8217;t compete with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startrek.com\/startrek\/view\/series\/DS9\/index.html\">Deep Space 9 (DS9)<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startrek.com\/startrek\/view\/series\/TNG\/index.html\">The Next Generation<\/a>.  The best things about DS9 were that Avery Brooks was running things, and the Ferengi &amp; their Rules of Acquisition, which governed their planet.  The Ferengi were all about profit, and me being a trader&#8230; well, let&#8217;s just say that I could relate.  They would reveal some of the rules throughout the series, which usually provided great comic relief.  At some point I decided to write them down, adding to a list I found on some old message board.  Here&#8217;s my relatively complete list with some of my favorites in bold:<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n1. Once you have their money&#8230;you never give it back.<br \/>\n     2. You can&#8217;t cheat an honest customer, but it never hurts to try.<br \/>\n     3. Never pay more for an acquisition than you have to.<br \/>\n     4.  Sex and profit are the two things that never last long enough.<br \/>\n     5. If you can&#8217;t break a contract, bend it.<br \/>\n     6. Never allow family to stand in the way of opportunity.<br \/>\n     7. Always keep your ears open.<br \/>\n     8. Small print leads to large risk.<br \/>\n     9. Opportunity plus instinct equals profit.<br \/>\n     10. Greed is eternal.<br \/>\n     11. Latinum isn&#8217;t the only thing that shines.<br \/>\n     12. Anything worth selling is worth selling twice.<br \/>\n     13. Anything worth doing is worth doing for money.<br \/>\n     14. Anything stolen is pure profit.<br \/>\n     15. Acting stupid is often smart.<br \/>\n     16. A deal is a deal&#8230;until a better one comes along.<br \/>\n     17. A bargain usually isn&#8217;t.<br \/>\n     18. A Ferengi without profit is no Ferengi at all.<br \/>\n     <b>19. Satisfaction is not guaranteed.<\/b><br \/>\n     20. When the customer is sweating, turn up the heat.<br \/>\n     <b>21. Never place friendship above profit. <\/b><br \/>\n     22. A wise man can hear profit in the wind.<br \/>\n     23. Money can never replace dignity.<br \/>\n     23(?). (revealed on Enterprise) Nothing is more important than your health, except for your money.<br \/>\n     25. There&#8217;s always a way out.<br \/>\n     26. As the customers go, so goes the wise profiteer.<br \/>\n     27. There&#8217;s nothing more dangerous than an honest businessman.<br \/>\n     30. Talk is cheap; synthehol costs money.<br \/>\n     31. Never make fun of a Ferengi&#8217;s mother&#8230;insult something he cares about instead.<br \/>\n     32. Be careful what you sell. It may do exactly what the customer expects.<br \/>\n     33. It never hurts to suck up to the boss.<br \/>\n     34. Peace is good for business.<br \/>\n     35. War is good for business.<br \/>\n     39. Friendship is temporary; profit is forever.<br \/>\n     <b>40. She can touch your lobes but never your latinum. <\/b><br \/>\n     41. Profit is its own reward.<br \/>\n     <b>42. What&#8217;s mine is mine, and what&#8217;s yours is mine too. <\/b><br \/>\n     43. Caressing an ear is often more forceful than pointing a weapon.<br \/>\n     44. Never confuse wisdom with luck.<br \/>\n     45. Expand or die.<br \/>\n     46. Make your shop easy to find.<br \/>\n     47. Don&#8217;t trust a man wearing a better suit than your own.<br \/>\n     48. The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife.<br \/>\n     50. Gratitude can bring on generosity.<br \/>\n     52. Never ask when you can take.<br \/>\n     57. Good customers are as rare as latinum&#8211;treasure them.<br \/>\n     58. Never buy what can be stolen.<\/b><br \/>\n     62. The riskier the road, the greater the profit.<br \/>\n     65. Win or lose, there&#8217;s always Huyperian beetle snuff.<br \/>\n     <b>68. Ear stroking will get you anything.<\/b><br \/>\n     69. Ferengi are not responsible for the stupidity of other races.<br \/>\n     <b>70. Get the money first, then let the buyers worry about collecting the merchandise. <\/b><br \/>\n     72. Never trust your customers.<br \/>\n     73. If it gets you profit, sell your own mother.<br \/>\n     75. Home is where the heart is&#8230;but the stars are made of latinum.<br \/>\n     76. Every once in a while declare peace&#8211;it confuses the hell out of your enemies.<br \/>\n     79. Beware of the Vulcan greed for knowledge.<br \/>\n     82. The flimsier the product, the higher the price.<br \/>\n     85. Never let the competition know what you&#8217;re thinking.<br \/>\n     89. Ask not what your profits can do for you, but ask what you can do for your profits.<br \/>\n     94. Females and finances don&#8217;t mix.<br \/>\n     97. Enough &#8230; is never enough.<br \/>\n     98. Act without delay! The sharp knife cuts quickly.<br \/>\n     99. Trust is the biggest liability of all.<br \/>\n     101. The only value of a collectible is what you can get somebody else to pay for it.<br \/>\n     102. Nature decays, but latinum lasts forever.<br \/>\n     <b>103. (from Enterprise) &#8211; A man is only worth the sum of his possessions.<\/p>\n<p>Hmm, after doing a Google search for the complete rules, I see that there are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/area51\/meteor\/5186\/complete_rules_of_acquisition.htm\">some slightly different, and more complete lists<\/a> than mine.  And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0671529366\/tradermike-20\" title=\"The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)\">there&#8217;s even a book<\/a> out.
