Stuck in Number Portability Hell

I was foolish enough to make the mistake of trying to port my home phone number to a new cell phone on December 9. I was originally planning to wait until all the reported glitches in the porting process were ironed out, but Amazon’s great Treo 600 deal forced my hand early. I knew the process wouldn’t be smooth but I had no idea it was this difficult to transfer a damn phone number. Today marks day 21 of waiting for Sprint PCS to get my number working on their system.

I knew I was in trouble as soon as my phone arrived and I called Sprint to activate it. Here’s how the phone conversation with the rep went (more or less):

Rasheed Wallace Say the NBA is Exploiting, uh, Brothas :-)

Rasheed Wallace had some strong words about the NBA in a recent interview:

But there is no ambivalence, no question about how he feels, in the strong language he uses to criticize the NBA and how it treats black players. In a league where all but one team owner and a vast majority of the decision-makers are white, a league where an estimated 80 percent of the players are black, race is always an issue just below the surface but one rarely discussed.

But discuss it, Wallace did, in terms sure to spark comment around the league.

Wallace thinks that the white establishment of the league is exploiting young black athletes to enrich itself, and he doesn’t mince words in talking about it.

“I ain’t no dumb-ass nigger out here. I’m not like a whole bunch of these young boys out here who get caught up and captivated into the league,” Wallace, 29, said. “No. I see behind the lines. I see behind the false screens. I know what this business is all about. I know the commissioner of this league makes more than three-quarters of the players in this league.

“There’s a whole lot of crunching numbers that, quote-unquote, me as an athlete and me as an NBA player should know. In my opinion, they just want to draft niggers who are dumb and dumber — straight out of high school. That’s why they’re drafting all these high school cats, because they come into the league and they don’t know no better. They don’t know no better, and they don’t know the real business, and they don’t see behind the charade.

“They look at black athletes like we’re dumb-ass niggers. It’s as if we’re just going to shut up, sign for the money and do what they tell us.”

I wish the reporter had asked him to go deeper on how the players are being exploited. I know many people will think he’s being ridiculous because he’s making $17 million this year, but hey, it’s all relative. No matter how much you make you can still be a ho — just don’t expect anyone to feel sorry for you though if you’re a multi-millionaire ho. 🙂

I hope somebody does a follow-up interview so we can hear some details about the exploitation. I hope it’s deeper than just the fact that David Stern makes more than most of the players do. Surely he doesn’t think the bosses aren’t gonna take their piece of the pie. And David Stern/the owners/NBA management are the ones responsible for creating an environment where Rasheed can make his long dollars.

Here’s the whole article:

Stanford Waxes #1 Ranked Kansas!

How about that Stanford Cardinal (or as my buddies from Cal would say ‘$tanfurd’) basketball team? We just knocked off the #1 ranked Kansas Jayhawks in the Wooden Classic. Don’t sleep on the Pac-10.

It’s good to have my favorite sport back in full swing. NBA ball has been painful to watch this season. Even though college ball has fallen off the last several years due to so many underclassmen leaving early, it’s still much more exciting than pro ball. Let the games begin.

Lyor Cohen, the Real Slim Shady?

Industry Rule number 4080 — record company people are shady!

Who knew Q-Tip could have been talking about Lyor Cohen when he wrote that lyric? Here’s a revealing look at Lyor Cohen, who the judge at his recent trial called ‘morally reprehensible’.

I would have liked to have seen more details on what Lyor did that was so reprehensible though. I’d also like to know if Russell Simmons was involved in the alleged acts. But the article’s a good read nonetheless. It also gives a good look at the drama surrounding Murder Inc. and Irv Gotti.

I’ve reprinted the article in its entirety in case the Yahoo story expires. (hat tip to Anil)
