Making the Band II

HardCore over at Thought 4 the Day wrote a great review of Making the Band II. This pretty much sums it up for me (except for the ‘terrible’ part):

However, if you have ANY knowledge about the music industry, if you’ve ever been a performer, or worked in the industry, THIS SHOW IS A JOKE. It’s terrible. A bunch of unworthy talent show winners, laying up on Diddy’s money, being lazy, complaining about everything and nothing at the same time, while creating music that’s just “aight”. For independent artists like 3rd Eye Open, who spend their own money to record, promote, and press up music, it’s a slap in the face. We actually grind for whatever we get or don’t get. Club gigs, outdoor concerts, churches, community events, you name it. Anything to get the name out there. And there are a long list of talented artists who having been doing the same thing for decades, and have yet to garner the attention they deserve. So watching these screw ups with everything already paid for, with unlimited access to a studio, sit around bickering all the time, is frustrating as hell. The highly volatile cast truly shows how dysfunctional a lot of our youth is. Their dysfunction shows in how they interact (fight), as well as in the content of the material they’re creating. Non-black people watching this show gotta think these young black people are crazy, unintelligent, emotional basket cases.

That said, I love the show strictly for its entertainment value. I can’t wait to see what ignorance the cast members will get into next. And I’m really curious about how they’re ever gonna gel into a group. We keep getting flashes of greatness from them, like on the song they did with Wyclef. But here are some thoughts I’ve been saving up during the season:

  • Did they really sign their contracts without even reading them? Not that some of them would have understood the contracts, based on the reading skills displayed when they had to read Russell Simmons’ autobiography. I truly hope they had enough sense to have a lawyer look at their contracts before signing them. Especially after Puffy joked with them about never being able to get out of the contracts.

  • RIF — If you can’t read well, can you write well? I sure don’t expect any groundbreaking lyrics from these cats. Not that they can’t be great successes with simplistic lyrics… but I’m just sayin’.

  • WTF is up with thumb-sucking Fred? My man is 20 years old an still sucking his thumb! I can’t believe Puffy didn’t get on his case for that when he was breaking everybody down a couple of weeks ago. Talk about an image problem. But judging by all the thumb-sucking teens I see around Atlanta, maybe that’s the ‘in’ thing to do these days.

  • Some of the band members just can’t seem to grasp the idea that Puffy doesn’t need them… they need Puffy. HardCore addresses this point well.

  • Will anyone be surprised when Dylan end up back in the jail? He’s the definition of a knucklehead.

A truly dysfunctional group, but it makes for great TV.

  1. I agree with you. All of the castmembers are knuckleheads. Except Sara of course. She is pretty levelheaded but I could be biases since she is sexy as hell!
I mean, the first day they are complaining that they have to walk to get him some cheesecake? Come on! This is the chance of a lifetime for them. I would be working 24/7. And who lets their son get to be twenty and still sucking his thumb. Sombody put some hot sauce on that fools thumb please.
I do have a bit more respect for Puffy as a businessman. All in all, the show is embarassing to me on many levels, but I can’t stop watching it.

  2. The “talent” are incredibly delusional and actually think that they’re talented. They can rap, but I wouldn’t buy any of their albums if they were solo artists, much less buy them as a dysfunctional group.

I also like that suburban white America gets to see some negroes from the street and once again get the misguided notion that the essence of being black is talking jive, wearing your hat crooked, sagging your pants, getting drunk & high, and beating each other up. Truly the best minstrel show I’ve seen since I watched Stuart Scott on ESPN Sportscenter last night.

    friggin’ dummies…

  3. To elaborate on the general consensus of addiction to this show…

It’s largely due to America’s fetish for ‘train wreck reality’ shows. We (yes, myself included) clamor for down and dirty entertainment. . .the more exploits and drama, the better. We are so desensitized and jaded that it takes people acting like fools – for real – for us to take notice. Well done, Puff!

Are they an embarassment to the Black Community? Indeed. I have to admit that I was a bit taken aback by Puffy’s selections to begin with. They are a motley crew of immature younstas who seem to lack the drive and zeal that it takes to make it on the scene. Their disturbing behavior perpetuates the stigma that permeates a community that has more to offer than just dope beats and rhymes (not to discredit the genre – love it).

I have to agree that Sara seems to be the exception. Hopefully, she will at least continue to garner that recognition and go on to accomplish some great things.

  4. I just want to comment on the show Making The Band II with P. Diddy. I just want to say I think im very disappointed the way Chopper treated Sara, Sara shouldve busted him in his nose. I thought Chopper was much cooler than that. But tonight show made me very angry. Im so sick of Fred and his arrogant ass!! Ness shouldve beaten his brains in. I tell you the truth if you had a bunch of white teens from the sububrs staying together there wouldnt be any problems in that house. I bet NSync, New Edition, and the Backstreets Boys didnt act as worse as they did. I tell you the truth some black kids just cant act right for one second. If you agree with me please email me at Girl7007@yahoo.com and we can discuss this.

  5. Oh and another thing I dont how Puffy could let lucifer i mean Fred stay in that house. I was Puffy I would like Phill on the fresh prince of Bel-Air. Pick Fred back his black behind and throw his ass out the door. Chopper’s breath probably stink like hell. LOLLLOL.

  8. God all you ppl are fucking dumb, Maybe your jealous that da band is makin it and your not? get over it, they are way more talented that any of your fatasses. get off the comp and go do something with your life. im white and i love this group, you ppl are to dumb to see their talent.

  9. Talk about dumb — come back when you figure out the difference between “your” and “you’re”. And who cares if you’re white? Is that supposed to mean that your opinion means more? Or that it’s more legitimate than opinions of non-whites?

  10. I can’t imagine that all those people who auditioned were worse than these idiots. Only Sarah has talent. The rest have no talent at all. And the fighting! man…to be given a great opportunity, plus room and board, and then be handed a contract…only to act like they do…I think the show would have been much better if they would have just followed diddy around. that’s the only interesting thing in the whole show…his world…certainly not theirs…

  11. First, I would like to say that the show has been hilarious. The six people that Diddy chose to be in the Band aren’t the right six. Their problem is that they are not considerate of each other. They feel that as long as I’m here as an indiviual, that’s all that matters. Once they understand that its everyones business what the other is doing and where the other is then they will be better off. For example, when Dylon didn’t show up for rehersal. Everyone felt like, I dodn’t care if he’s not here before we leave, we’re going without him. That was a fucked up decision because as “A Band” you should always be concerned of the others where abouts not matter what the situation is. They have alot to learn. I also think that Babs instigate things too much. She needs to stop that shit. She instigated the fight between Fred and Ness, and pumped Fred head up to go into the studio to jump Ness. Bottom line is that they need to grow up and stop showing the world that they aren’t use to shit.

  12. Da band is a very talented group. Each person has something very unique. Dylon has the whole regga stuff going on, Sara has a beautiful voice, Choppa…. i don’t think i need to speak for him he carries everything a male rap artist should, Fred has a crazy way of rhyming – i love his voice, babs is straight gangster but i’m not so into her rhymes, and the one that always gets in a fight with Fred (lol), his flow is really funky. I like that. P.diddy is obviously a genius with the music industry, his stuff is pure genius. What would make ya’ll think he’d pick some lame azz people, he knows what he’s doing. So what, they have thier fights in between and aruguments but, at the end of the day you know thier da band. Rap is all about that lifestlye, let them have thier fights they need to get out that fustration. Little by little i see these poeple evolving into real artist. Naturally thier NOT perfect, give them a chance to become it.

  13. It’s amazing how people can classify people by their color. How the hell does color make a person? Who cares what color someone is , its is their actions and yes the fighting on the show did get on my nerves but that show was edited as all reality tv shows are and we dont know all that happened. i like this group and think if P. Diddy has faith they are hot then they will be. If we want to start classifying races lets say all white men come back and kill their coworkers and families when fired or money gets too tight. Or white mothers like to kill their own children and claim postpartum depression or just damn crazy. Now how do u white racist like that. Come burn a cross under that statement. See it doesnt feel so great to make racist remarks and classify all into one category. All people are unique and their inner self makes them the person they are not their complexion. Get over it or dont look !!!whatever whatever to all the angry folks ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. To everyone I didnt say all black youths I said some black youth. Yes I know there are some white teens out there who are just as bad. Maybe allowed my anger to get to me. Oh by the honey im african american female. Are you suprised LOLLOLLOLLOL I dont think an african american female would a burn cross LOLLOLLLOL with tears in my eyes.

  15. Who is the real asshole? P. Diddy. He is taking from the poor. He treats his on people like shit. They should have named it Making P. Diddy richer.

  16. Look leave P. Diddy alone hes trying to light a fire in their butts. On last weeks episode they were are going off because they didnt get their paychecks on time. How stupid??? Immature brats!

  17. yo, just don’t hate on anyone i mean we should all show each other love. i wish everyone in da band luck just like i wish everyone else luck. i’m not going to diss someone when they’re trying to make it out there i mean, we all have our struggles right?

  18. What’s Up!! Ya’ll talking about “Da Band” like they ain’t shit!!! Hell!!! Half of ya’ll ain’t shit for talking shit to them!! What the hell wrong with ya’ll!! Most of these cats are from the ghetto, probably couldn’t afford toilet paper, & ya’ll just saying this & that!! P Diddy knew that they were bad from the start, the name “BAD BOY” speaks for itself!!! he’s trying to guide them through the ropes of being a successful Hip/Hop artist!! 50 Cent grew up in the ghetto without his mom & his dad & he turn out pretty good!! Making millions!! BUt ya’ll see these rookies trying to make it & ya’ll go put them down cause they too ghetto or they too dumb to understand the business!! Ya’ll the ones that is DUMB cause ya’ll can’t grasp the FUcking title they show on MTV “Making the Band!!” That’s what it is!! Who gives a fuck with Fred sucks his thumb, if the nigga can flow, let him go!! Who gives a fuck if Choppa can’t read or write, if that nigga can rhyme he’s tight, aight!!! Ya’ll people or cold hearted bastards!!! Old Puss Ass Bitches can’t understand there brain is in there head not there Ass!!!

  19. Funny that you’re calling other people dumb when you don’t even know the difference between ‘there’ and ‘their’. I don’t think anybody here said they were too dumb to understand the business. The point I was making is that they SHOULD be more concerned about the business side. And for that part of the business reading and writing is very important. You can be the illest MF on a mic, but if the business side isn’t taken care of you’ll be broke.

  20. Ok Ok!!! U right about that but what I meant , dumb ass, is that these cats are from the GHETTO!!! Do U know what that means!!! Most black people from the ghetto can’t read or write!!! And even if they did learn, they wouldn’t know how to pronounce big words or certain words that is hard to say!!! P Diddy should want these playas to be successful in anything since he got them to signed to Bad Boy!!! He could help them read & write or hired somebody to help old Chopper & Fred!! lol Them boys wild, but if he picked me from 5,000 people to be in the group & have a phat ass check then hell yeah, I’m willing to set my mind in learning anything cause I’m out the ghetto now!!! I’m making cheese, Bitch!! Beautiful!! Come from being nothing to Something!!! U know what I’m saying!!! Like I said before if U couldn’t read what what I wrote, They are rookies, dog, this is just the beginning!! I’ll tell U this, if they don’t step up after they been rewarded with the money, making a CD, & being signed to Bad Boy!! Then they are really dumb cause they didn’t learn anything if they come back & try to make another CD!! Yeah, It was dumb for them to buy a damn chain & not try to get a nicer house than being in the projects, but they young & wanted to act foolish except for Sarah!! (That woman is fine!! : ) But that’s all I got to say!! “People make mistakes but we should learn from our mistakes!!” Peace!!!
P.S.: Ya’ll people ain’t dumb!! Different opinions thats all!!! That’s cool!! One!!

  21. I just hope that as time goes on that The Band becomes more focused because they have the chance of a lifetime, a chance many of us only dream we could have.

  22. ya need to look at this show in a positive way for all teens to get a chance to live in a big house and not have to think where there sleping that night or what your goin to eat tommorow….and dont always look at it as a black and white thing….all ppl get into fights you guys should be happy a bunch of black kids finally made it on top and now ya trying to criticize them man ya all HATERS so holla back or should I say bye i might be being to ghetto for ya

  23. Aight all these pep on the show are mad dumb how u gonna have a chance to do something, its right in front of you and you gonna be that lazy and not want to listen to P. Diddy whos about to give them everything they always wanted. They all sound good in their own ways but together they do not mix at all. Thats all i go to say. One Love

  24. Watch u mean mad dumb…..can u rap?? if so why aint u on tht show and actually p.diddy is not giving them everything they wanted he just giving them a chance to earn everything they wanted…..And wat u mean they do not mix at all have you even heard there cd……..me personally i think there pretty for there first time ever mixing on a cd…..SO QUIT HATEN im out holla

  25. Why is it that the people who come here defending Da Band can’t seem to differentiate between “there”, “their”, and “they’re”? It’s not that difficult. My people… I’m concerned…

  26. I just finished working on season three for MTV and I just wanted to say they are good kids deep down, just a little excited with the fame (understandably). Having met and lived with them for three months, I realized you can’t judge them by what you see after post-production.

  27. I give them loads of credit for getting as far as they have. But I think P.Diddy had it right when he called them the deliquents. It should be an intresting second season to say the least.

  28. I don’t get why people make fun of this band. Is it because they are making more money than the rest of you? Everytime the topic is about black movies, reality shows, and music, I see people critizing how they are illiterate because they cannot differentiate between “their” or “there”. Also, to those people who thinks they are so intelligent because they can speak proper english, I hope they have any knowledge that every person in the world has his own kind of intelligence. It may vary from spatial intelligence, to rhythmical intelligence, and to literal intelligence, as some of you claim. Some people may not be able to read or write, but they are still human, and they deserve respect. Howcome some people claim themselves to be intelligent, but none of them know proper conduct when treating others of different races or intellectual capablities? Thank you for the time. I hope i shed some light to some people.

P.S. I’m black and I was raised in dah ghetto somtime in mah life ๐Ÿ™‚ WOOOH! Chek my unintelligent repsonse ova there.. HOLLA

  29. correction on my earlier post for those criticizing people.

    1. 4th line *his (should be his or her)
    2. 3rd line *thinks (should be think)
    3. 6th line *howcome (shuold be separated by a space)

    thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

  30. Well da band cool only person that realy should be there is Sara becuz she cool and she ain’t putin up with any crap the rest of them need to take they hood rich a**** back to the hood they think they dizerve to be famuz just becuz they from the hood well if thats the case then all my friends from the STL should be famuz. YA HURD MAY!!! HOlla At YA Gurl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. I personally feel that sara is the most talented and friendliest of the group. The members seem to show next to no respect towards her whatsoever. Freddy always yelling at her. Come on now. That girl is the oldest one in the group they can show her some RESPECT! Besides if it was not for sara being in the group i would not watch the show. I am a sara fan 100%! I wish puffy would make the band members stop smoking around sara because it is wrong and disrespectful of them to do that. Puffy don’t seem to have much of a heart anyways. Sara is too good for that group. Whatever goes down i am praying for sara. I feel sorry for her. I would leave that group if i was her.

  32. I’ve come to the realization that I’m jealous. I couldn’t figure out for the longest why I would be so hype talking to my wife about the absurdities of this show.

I mean Sarah’s not really integral. (sorry Sarah fans…) Ness is a cookie cutter MC. Dylan…Diiiiiiielaaaaaan. Babs should have been called Ugs. Fred, I like his voice, but that thumb-sucking ain’t gangsta. That’s wanksta! Chopper, get some money, buy gold teeth and tatoos, but won’t improve his skills.

And here I am, struggling to pay my bills with more skills than most of them… I mean, I’m actually typing this between the commercials of the show. Sarah just broke her phone and slammed the door, and I’m-hold on…

Yeah, I’m back… Uh, yeah, I’m jealous! That’s what it boils down to. I would have walked back to Tennessee to get Puffy a Vols hat or something to stay in that deal. I mean once you get on like that, you should be able to pimp your image by yourself. I’d be doing mixtapes, and getting on people’s songs…

But you got to love a good ig’nant show. It’s pure entertainment. S-hold on…

How can you beat Dylan getting caught by Puffy. I mean, if he got me out of jail…I would be at every show. Hell, I’d do extra shows, I’d find shows for us. Something! But that’s the value of entertainment.

I’m out, and for the record…y’all already know that Sarah would beat Fred’s ass like he stole something.

  33. Dylan is gay, but because he’s from the Caribbean I suppose it’s not really in his best interest to come out?
    He’s not my type anyway.

  34. Personally, I find it amusing that as a human being you can sit here and say that Non-black people watching this show gotta think these young black people are crazy, unintelligent, emotional basket cases. Yes, these individuals fight on this show, and yes the individuals are ignorant to the world of Hip-Hop. However, for you to be able to sit here on the internet and make racial gestures shows exactly how ignorant you are as an individual yourself. For someone who can so-called rhyme and grind as you say you do, if you were doing it the right way, you would have been on the show, and you would have your name out there, you would be making the money that you say you deserve.

I am black myself, and personally, yes I think that the show gives off the wrong image of African Americans here in the United States, but thatโ€™s what the U.S. is about, stereotypes, and it cracks me up to see you all bagging on African Americans and what they do on television, because it weren’t for African Americans, who would have given you the idea to rhyme, who would have given you the inspiration to even find a beat. The way you dress, they way you think, the way you move, you get that from us. And it is so funny to me to see you all sit up here and call African American’s ignorant, unintelligent, dummies, and whatever else you would like to call us.

Because it is you and your people who go out and get lip enhancers, breast implants, butt implants, tan your bodies, and flip your hair out, braid your hair, sag your pants, twist your hats, walk with a limp, drink a 40, wear a fro, coordinate your clothes by color, wear your belt around your jeans instead of through the loops. African American’s are one of the most creative individuals on this earth. And if you don’t think so, the next time you go shopping, look at how your clothes are made, and the go down to North Philly, the Bronx, Harlem, Manhattan even, Staten Island, Colorado, D.C. urban areas, or just watch BET and see where that designer Tommy Hilfiger got his designs from. They watch whatโ€™s hot, which is us urban areas, and they design from that. Why do you ask?

Because African Americans are the ones who have less and make up shit because they don’t have much. African American’s are the ones who can shop at a damn thrift store buy clothes that you don’t want anymore and make it the next hottest item in the fashion industry. So don’t sit up here and make misleading remarks about a race of individuals that you all copy so hard. Because if you deserved what you so badly craved and envied you would probably have it by now. But, since you don’t how about you go out and try harder.

Who knows you could be another Eminem, but I doubt that because he’s a lyrical genius, and you, your just an impersonator, a wanna be, a sell out, but who am I to call you names, as you say, your only trying to make it, but isn’t everyone?

  35. First of all, I didn’t make those statements, they’re a quote from another site. (The link to the original is just above the quote.) That said, I do fully agree with it, which is why I posted it. And for your information, I, as well as HardCore, the original author are Black.

As for your blanket statements, I think you’re hypersensitive and have read WAY too much into the commentary here.

  36. I think that the band is tight, and fred repreasenting from miami is the realist, off the chain.well, I’v some of my oun lyrics and poeple say its good.so i am here watching da band and they are going through alot right now. over all the band is raw!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. fred stop sucking you fucking thumb thats why u talk funny now .ness is the shit.sarah is too mature for the band and needs to go solo.babs just jealous ugly ass can’t even rap weak ass that one beat i won’t be catching .choppa u not shit marks in your face like you on that boy u and babs belong together a monster for a beast

  38. I love Sara and Ness they are doing the damn thing but the rest of the group sucks..I want to hear Sara sing more and Ness Rap because they have Talent. Sorry to you Fred, Chopper and Babs fans.Even P Diddy said it.. Will all see in the end who had the real talent and I bet it won’t be Fred, Chopper or Babs.

  39. I think that diddy is being very selfish and very all for his self. i think that letting the band go is the dumbiest thing that he could ever do. the da band is the best show that mtv had ever produced and diddy is dumb as hell for cutting the band. fred is sexy and has a great voice, chopper is real crazy, sara can sing, dylan brought a lot of problems, and ness is crazy- cool. i really liked the band and diddy should lose a lot of publicity for being dumb.

  40. I thought the show could’nt have been anymore realistic. The fact that arguments and fights went on should’nt be debated, like people watching the show never saw a damn fight or heard an argument before. These things happen everyday all over the country, alot of times on a worse case scenario. Ghetto niggaz act how they wanna act and they not about to change for anybody which is why “Da Band” is no more. You can’t take six people from different hoods and expect them to always get along. There is just one thing I never understood though, was “Da Band” the best name Diddy could come up with for a hiphop/r&b group?

  41. I really like Da Band. I watch it with my, 2 sons They are 16 and 18 years old,. They want to be Rap Artist.Da Band, has taught my kids alot about the rap Industry. They see that you have to be, hungry and really want it, in this type of bussiness. This show is also, good for any Artist whose, thinking about making music.P. Diddy is to hard on those ‘Cats’. They all have potiential. I feel that Diddy, could have sit down with the group, and really explained to them, what the business was really about, and he could have, told them to get lawyers or, talk to some of his own legal staff. This was poor Business. It makes me think, that he used them, because he knew, that they didn’t know, anything about the Industry. That’s a shame. If I was them, I’d be looking for another record label. It’s been said that, ‘Diddy’s a conman’. Now(What do you think about, What’s been said about him)?. These People to me, were hungry, cause to walk all the way, to Brooklyn ,for some Cheesecake, late at night like that, took a lot of nerve. I really hope, all of them prosper, without the Bad Boy Label. Much respect. (for Ness,Sara,Fred,Bab,and Dylan).

  42. A bunch of lazy ungrateful whiny dimwits. I ain’t never seen so many people complain so much about having things handed to them.

  43. And Dylan is the biggest dork I ever seen. Bad dancing moves, bad rapping, bad everything. Just a big dork who thinks he deserves to be a star not because he worked for it but just because.

  44. YO WHATS UP MY NAME IS SPEEK GREENE.I HAVE THE NEW CHOPPA EXCLUSIVE.I MANAGE THE CAT THAT PRODUCED THE TRACK HIT ME UP FOR MORE INFO 203-956-6341 SPEEK.

  45. Anyone remember the wall quote during season 1 when they first moved into Diddy’s House?

  46. hey all, here’s my opinion on Da Band. I think that Puff made a very proper choice when picking these band members, they are all significantly important, dylon with the reggae, chopper with the arrogance, sara with the beautiful voice, babs with the gangsta attitude, fred…as crazy as his voice is and ness, what can i say, he’s great! so when ppl blab on and on about how much they argue, how bout u try and live with five other ppl u just met tryin to make it big in the music industry, especially when they all come from different backgrounds, everyone has their flaws that someone else isnt gonna like but u just gotta get used to the shit, they have potential as a band or even if each of them go solo, ppl have to let them grow. Diddy, u did great!!

  47. I don’t know what is the matter with y’all people, yeah da band might of been dysfunctional
as an group. But to sit here I read about how y’all disrespecting, and critizing the da band like make me sick.Because sara is very talented with her voice, choppa a.k.a young city has a killer rap flow,he should get sign up for cash money record label.Cash Money can use his sick flow. Moreover, fred also has a sick flow;however,
choppa flow is sicker. Babs has a nasty flow for a female rap artist, and Ness.Ness I knew from the begining that he was gonna make, because his lyrics has deep punchlines.P-diddy is a monster for dismantling da band, I’m not feeling him anymore. well nuff respect for the da band, I hope choppa get signed up for cash money. Welcome Ma$e.

  48. These kids are just dumb and stupid and puff d was using them to make money, there were always fighting what with that is that the way a ll black people are, what kind of mssg are they sending no wander white people are scare of them, it’s like they don’t know any better.
can’t we all just get along…

  49. Da Band was a bunch of ungratful, unmotivated babies.the only one with actual heart was Sara. to be given an oppotunity to have everything at your fingertips i don’t understand how people who came from the bottom could be so selfish and lazy and just blow that chance. Diddy gave this group so many chances to succeed (i think he gave them to many chances) but what do they do instead of trying to get down to business. let’s see they chill in their rooms gambling playin craps, go to the clubs, get in stupid fights when they shold be sticking together. They basically use Diddy and his money for their own enjoyment and expect to be huge stars with no hard work. They got the nerve to get frustrated to go to Brooklyn to get some damn cheesecake and get mad when Diddy tries to correct them on their flow. that is a huge opportunity to blow up and they put up big fronts when Diddy’s around acting like they gonna change, Diddy leaves back to the sittin around.
