Yahoo! Mail Spam Explosion

Is it just me or is everybody else getting bombarded with spam on their Yahoo! Mail accounts? It seems like ever since they announced their ‘new spam measures‘ the spam has at least doubled. I’m now getting about 200 spams a day. Every time I go into my account I have to empty the bulk mail folder because I’m running out of storage space. This is enough to make me want to give up on e-mail.

I have a couple of theories on what’s happening here. Either the spammers have taken Yahoo!’s dummy e-mail address ploy as a challenge or Yahoo! has tweaked the basic filtering to ‘encourage’ people to upgrade to the paid Mail Plus which has ‘improved spam guard’. (Why do I think it’s the latter?)

I’m just glad that my real e-mail address (through my school’s alumni association) barely gets any spam at all (there I go jinxing myself). I feel bad for people who get this much spam in their main e-mail account. Yahoo! is now as bad as HotMail used to be… I guess you get what you pay for.

  1. mike, i use yahoo’s POP3 forwarding service and apply my own spam filters in turn… i’d say only about 5% of the spam sent actually hits the Inbox… i think the service is $19.95 a year, but well worth it imo. i manually empty the “Bulk” folder (which I don’t have forwarded) about once a month which isn’t too onerous.

  2. I guess I’d pay for their advanced features if I really relied on Yahoo Mail, but since I’ve got my trusty, mostly spam-free, real e-mail address…

  3. There is a definite increase in spam on Yahoo. I just removed 320 emails from my bulk mail folder for the weekend. I would usually find nearly 80 over the weekend. The spam is just out of control.

  5. maybe the bulk mail doesn’t count towards the space, but most of my spam goes straight to the inbox, clogging the system … I guess you do get what you pay for, but still – considering Yahoo make such a song about being anti spam, the amoutn I’m getting is a joke – around 60 in the inbox each day!!
