Sad Week for Cuban Music

Compay Segundo

Celia Cruz has just passed away of complications from brain cancer. She’s the second Cuban music legend to pass this week. Compay Segundo, of the incomparable Buena Vista Social Club passed on July 13th. This article, The Keeper of Cuba’s Music, has a good retrospective of his life. I’ll miss both of these incredible musicians, but they live on through their music.

P.S. If you haven’t seen the movie Buena Vista Social Club, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Update: Telemundo’s show Cotorreando is airng a tribute show to Celia ahora mismo (right now). I think this same episode will re-air tomorrow morning at 5:00. Set your recorders!

  1. Indeed. I need to fill my changer up with some Tito, Celia, and all the BVSC related CDs I own (and Bambeleo for good measure). If I smoked cigars, I’d fire one of those up too. Maybe I’ll get a bubble-gum cigar. 😉

  2. For this occasion, you should take up cigars. I have a couple Cohibas and a few MonteCristos we can spark up in tribute.

  3. I was lucky enough to see BVSC a couple years ago in D.C. I am so glad I got that opportunity, because the future will only bring more of these passings. A gente vai levando…
